(5) To validate the integrated system on a patient database. (4) To integrate CAD and interactive rendering into the commercial Viatronix V3D system. (3) To accelerate the CAD processing and interactive rendering using commodity graphics hardware. (2) To develop interactive CAD reading strategies. Our specific aims are: (1) To exploit 3D subsurface morphology and texture to rapidly identify and accurately classify polyps. The goal of this effort is to exploit polyp characteristics in the CT data to automatically identify suspicious regions of the colon wall. Currently our focus is on the research and development of 3D texture-based computer aided detection (CAD) techniques using 3D texture information within the colon wall. have been advancing VC development and commercialization.

For several years our research groups at Stony Brook University and those at Viatronix Inc. From the physician's perspective, however, VC still requires careful inspection of the entire length of the colon, a somewhat tedious process that takes at least 15 minutes. Studies have shown this non-invasive procedure to be accurate, comfortable technique for screening. Using computed tomography (CT) images of the patient's abdomen, a computer visualization system allows the physician to virtually navigate within a constructed 3D model of the colon looking for polyps. Recently, a new procedure, known as virtual colonoscopy (VC), has been developed for colon cancer screening. This reluctance is in reaction to the discomfort, embarrassment and risk associated with the invasive optical colonoscopy procedure. Unfortunately, most people do not follow this recommendation even though removing polyps prior to malignant transformation can prevent cancer.

Since most cancers arise from polyps over 5-15 years of malignant transformation, screening programs to detect small polyps less than 10mm in diameter have been advocated. ESD #6 also helps keep home and business insurance low by providing fire, emergency and 911 services by full-time, well-trained professionals.Colorectal carcinoma is the second leading cause of death from cancer in the United States. ESD #6 also works with the Forney 911 system to provide quick response during medical emergencies.ĮSD #6 plays a vital role in maintaining public safety and a high quality of life for families living outside of Forney. ESD #6 contracts with the Forney Fire Department to handle fire response services, as well as critical response for automotive accidents, critical incidents on ranches, and other emergencies. Due to our population growth, ESD #6 was approved in 2001 by voters of the unincorporated areas outside of Forney and is funded by property taxes, the same way city residents pay for their emergency services.ĮSD #6 is an independent governmental entity managed by five members of a Board of Commissioners who serve two-year terms and are appointed by the County Commissioners. Prior to the formation of ESD #6, the families living in the rural areas of Kaufman County were served by a small, volunteer fire department. While the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department and County Constables help protect families from crime in these unincorporated areas, fire and emergency services are provided through the Kaufman County Emergency Services District #6 (ESD #6). And, with just a few exceptions, their children attend the highly-rated Forney Independent School District. Most of these families worship in churches, participate in youth sports, shop and dine in Forney. These families reside in various subdivisions like Windmill Farms, Devonshire and Travis Ranch, as well as on the larger lots and acreage in rural areas, with some being passed down for generations.

Did you know that 28,000 people live in unincorporated areas of Kaufman county just outside the boundaries of Forney? That’s about 4,000 more residents than live within the Forney city limits.
